ONE CHANGE THAT I HAVE EMBRACED TO KEEP UP WITH THESE

“NEW NORMAL” TIMES

It was March 2020 when our country went into tizzy by corona-virus pandemic. It started as a region specific practical joke but spiraled into a un- ending ordeal. I had never comprehended that the stressful times would affect my psychological, emotional and physical well- being.

The first phase of lock-down impelled the apparently closest ones to switch sides. The masks started to fall off.

I learnt the harsh reality that my family did not figure in any of the schemes for folks whom I had spent decades loving and pleasing.

The big change that I have embraced is self-actualization. I emphasis more than ever on mental health. It’s high time we stopped glamorizing multi- tasking and over work. I practice mindfulness. I write positive affirmations and paste on my work desk. I restrict, block people who spread pessimism and obstructiveness. I have clearly understood what matters the most and who care the least. The change is facilitating in keeping my mind clutter free.

I complain less. I criticize less. I condemn less. I am more appreciative and compassionate. The realization that there is indeed a super natural power controlling our lives yet guiding and guarding us has made me a devout.

The faith that was snuffed out by materialism seems rekindled.

Another change that I have brought about in my life is practicing minimalism.

I have embraced the triad of simplicity, sustainability and sensibility.

Having switched to modest choices my needs are now limited. It’s a conscious choice to live with freedom from passion to possess, hoard and waste. I recycle and I donate.

With having not to fuss over the ongoing sales and what to wear next day I am left with lot of time to hone my creative skills. But I have been a fashionista all these years, the change is coming along sluggishly.

The pantry boasts of locally sourced fresh veggies and seasonal fruits. The trips to super market have lessened and processed food items are diminishing form the kitchen menu.

Covid 19 pandemic presented as an opportunity to instill the value of self-reliance – “atmanirbhartra” in my family members.

A sudden request for leave of cleaner, house help or cook does not make me anxious since the household chores are not gender specific anymore.

All four of us (self, spouse and two teenage children) are now adept in cooking, scrubbing, cleaning, washing, gardening and organizing.

The pandemic will be over soon but the changes I have incorporated are here to stay.

Yesterday I was clever so I wanted to change the world .Today I am wise so I want to change myself - Rumi
